Are we there yet?

My family took a road trip this past week. The kids watched the movie Shrek 2 with their headphones on and began asking the question, “are we there yet? are we there yet?” Luckily, they don’t do this as a habit.

I found it interesting, from a project management perspective, that project stakeholders (sponsors, customers, team members, etc) ask this same question. Luckily, there are several devices at your disposal to address these nagging questions:

* milestones – to mark major achievements on the project
* phase-gate reviews – to gain approval from senior management to proceed to the next phase of the project’s lifecycle
* approvals – defined in the Project Charter at a high level and further detailed in the Project Scope Statement

And there are several more. Just like the milestones and mileage signs on the side of the highway show your progress, project management devices help illustrate when you’ll be where you promised you’ll be and keep your stakeholders’ expectations managed.

Bathroom breaks are another matter altogether.
